Body of Robert Mugabe en route from Singapore to Zimbabwe for burial

Elderly men wait for medicines at a pharmacy at Parirenyatwa hospital in Harare

A vehicle believed to be carrying the body of former Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has left a Singapore funeral parlour.

The Sunday Mail quoted presidential spokesman George Charamba in reporting Mr Mnangagwa and family members will receive the body at the airport named after the former president in the capital, Harare.

A Zimbabwe state newspaper said his body would return to the country on Wednesday.

Mugabe died on Friday aged 95 in Singapore, where he had long received medical treatment.

Days after the continent has come to terms with the passing of Robert Mugabe, his family has yet to confirm the details of the former leader's burial.

Police motorbikes lined up outside the Singapore Casket, a funeral parlour where Mugabe's body was being held, in a sign that a dignitary would soon be departing.

Mr Mugabe, 95, a controversial leader who ruled his country for nearly 40 years, will lie in state at two different locations in the capital of Harare.

The burial is scheduled for Sunday.

Mugabe's family and Mnangagwa's government are apparently at odds over whether it would be at his homestead northwest of Harare or at a shrine for liberation heroes in the capital.

Leo Mugabe, Mugabe's nephew, who is the spokesperson for the family confirmed this to Zimlive, a Zimbabwean media outfit. Mugabe's first wife, Sally, is buried at Heroes' Acre and a vacant plot reserved for the former president is next to her grave.

Leo Mugabe told reporters that Mugabe had died "a very bitter man" because he felt betrayed by the former political and military leaders who were his allies for close to four decades before they forced him to resign in November, 2017.

"After several meetings, the family has told government that the final decision lay with the relatives who are in Singapore and will accompany Mugabe's body back home", a family source revealed.
