British Airways grounds all planes amid two-day pilots' strike

British Airways logos are seen on tail fins at Heathrow Airport

The British Airline Pilots' Association (BALPA), the union that represents the pilots, said that they will strike for 48 hours over a long-running salary dispute and plan further strikes towards the end of the month if the issue is not resolved.

"We understand the frustration and disruption BALPA's strike action has caused our customers", the airlines said.

BA said it is "extremely sorry" and told customers affected they can expect a full refund.

It claims that BALPA offered no information on which pilots would strike, meaning the airline was unable to predict "how many would come to work or which aircraft they are qualified to fly".

The travel plans of nearly 200,000 passengers have been plunged into chaos as a strike by pilots prompted British Airways to cancel most of its flights Monday and Tuesday.

Business travellers and those vacationing are being left stranded at airports as British Airways confirmed it has had to cancel "nearly 100 percent of flights" due to strike action being taken by pilots.

"It's going to punish customers, it's going to punish our brand, it's going to punish the rest of the colleagues", BA Chief Executive Alex Cruz told BBC TV as IAG shares dropped by as much as 3 per cent in early trading.

The association also pointed to a almost 10-percent jump in pre-tax profits reported by BA's parent firm, IAG, last year.

British Airways has advised that if a flight is cancelled that passengers should not go to the airport. Other carriers associated with British Airways, including BA CityFlyer, Comair and Sun-Air were not affected.

British Airways said other labor unions - constituting nearly 90 percent of all company staff, including engineers, cabin crew and ground staff - had accepted the 11.5 percent increase.

"This strike will have cost the company considerably more than the investment needed to settle this dispute", according to BALPA.

"One day of strike action will cost BA, on their own figures, £40 million", BALPA tweeted on Sunday.

BALPA wants the pay deal to include profit sharing for BA pilots, who on average earn around 90,000 pounds a year.

Pilots vowed to go ahead with the strike following a breakdown in talks over a new contract. Industrial action is also planned for September 27, a statement on BA's website said.

BALPA General Secretary Brian Strutton said: "Pilots are standing firm and have shown just how resolute they are today".

"I think British Airways took the decision some weeks ago that they would close down the airline operation and it's up to them to do things that way".

Thousands of customers have had to make alternative travel arrangements, and the airline has come in for criticism over how it handled communications with passengers before the strikes.

Passengers can receive refunds or rebook for later flights.
