Canadian woman arrested in college admissions scandal

Xiaoning Sui, 48, of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, was arrested in Spain and charged with one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, according to a news release from US Attorney for the District of Massachusetts Andrew Lelling. She's accused of paying $400,000 in exchange for her son's admission to UCLA as a fake soccer recruit in 2018.

Singer allegedly paid former men's soccer coach Jorge Salcedo $100,000 to list Sui's son as a recruited athlete, which significantly increases the odds of being admitted to UCLA, according to Sui's indictment. In November 2018, her son was granted admission to UCLA on a 25% scholarship.

In an August 2018 phone call, Singer told Sui he could "guarantee" her son's admission to UCLA in exchange for the payment, according to Andrew Lelling, the USA attorney in MA, in an indictment filed in March and unsealed on Tuesday.

Xiaoning Sui, of British Columbia, was arrested by Spanish authorities on Monday night, according to the US attorney's office in MA, which is seeking Sui's extradition.

UCLA "took immediate corrective action after this case was initially outlined", spokesman Tod Tamberg said.

UCLA "is not aware of any now enrolled student-athletes who are under suspicion" by the Justice Department, Tamberg said.

Singer, who has already pleaded guilty in the wide-spread scheme, passed the snapshots to a cohort, disgraced UCLA soccer-academy director Laura Janke.

Prosecutors did not explain why Sui was not part of the original group of parents charged. She wired another $400,000 after her son's admittance.

Salcedo has pleaded not guilty to racketeering conspiracy. Court documents show Sui's indictment was filed in March but remained under seal until Tuesday. Fifteen parents have pleaded guilty, while 19 are fighting the charges.

David Sidoo's lawyer, Richard Schoenfeld, said at the time the plea was entered in writing after an indictment from the U.S. District Court in MA accused him of wiring about $100,000 in January 2013 from an account in Canada to an account in California.

Vancouver businessman David Sidoo has been charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.

Sui is the 52nd person to be charged in the college-admissions scandal, in which parents paid Singer to bribe college coaches and test administrators to help their children get into elite universities.

Huffman turned heads for perhaps the last time last week after she was sentenced to 14 days in jail, a $30,000 fine, one year of probation and 250 hours of community service for her role in the scandal.

The Varsity Blues operation resulted in charges for a number of high-profile parents, including actor Felicity Huffman, actor Lori Loughlin and Loughlin's husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli.
