Crews work to restore power and clear debris left in Dorian's wake

ABC News
Heavy rainfall across parts of South Dakota Minnesota & Wisconsin could result in 2 to 3 inches or more in rain totals

The tropics are a windy place at the moment which falls in line with meteorologists' belief that the week of September 10 is the peak of hurricane season. "Make sure you make that concern known to the CRTC".

There was no official photo-op for the prime minister, who is expected to announce the official start of the federal election campaign on Wednesday.

"There are certain parts of Halifax that I can say, having seen it first-hand, that there are some very complex restorations that need to occur", Nova Scotia Power president Karen Hutt told CBC's Information Morning on Monday. The area is still attempting to recover from the devastating amount of damage.

All three companies have pointed to the extensive power outages as the cause and say they are working with Nova Scotia Power to get power restored to the affected sites as soon as possible.

They were forced to take cover while Hurricane Dorian powers on.

The hurricane which devastated the Bahamas and battered the coasts of North and SC was downgraded to a post tropical cyclone with winds gusting at about 119 kilometres per hour (74 mph) by the time it made landfall in Nova Scotia on Saturday.

There have been no reported injuries, but roofs were torn off and trees were snapped like twigs, pulling down power lines across a wide swath of the Maritimes.

Also at that time, in Prince Edward Island, 18,000 customers were without power, and in New Brunswick, the number was 2,600.

Hundreds of thousands of Canadians living on the Atlantic coast remain without power today following Hurricane Dorian, CBC News reports. AT, there were 108,260 Nova Scotia Power customers without electricity.

A Canadian Forces representative said troops have accomplished tasks in the greater Halifax area and will now extend their mission to elsewhere in the province.

Nova Scotia residents were also being warned to stay out of provincial and national parks, and to be careful when using generators.

Light armoured vehicles were spotted patrolling the streets as soldiers with chainsaws were ready to clear the streets of fallen trees.

Power crews from Quebec, Ontario, Florida and ME have been called in to help.

In Nova Scotia, one of the most dramatic scenes during Saturday's storm was the collapse of a crane in downtown Halifax, which raised questions about the level of preparedness at the construction site. No one was injured, but the Nova Scotia Labour Department is conducting an investigation, and a stop work order has been issued.
