Donald Trump moves to ban flavoured vaping products because 'people are dying'

Donald Trump said vaping was not

The move to ban flavored e-cigarettes comes as six people have died nationwide and hundreds of others have fallen ill with mysterious lung diseases from vaping.

The surprise White House announcement could remake the multibillion-dollar vaping industry, which has been driven by sales of flavored nicotine formulas such as "grape slushie" and "strawberry cotton candy".

"We intend to clear the market of flavored e-cigarettes to reverse the deeply concerning epidemic of youth e-cigarette use that is impacting children, families, schools and communities", Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement.

"The tremendous progress we've made in reducing youth tobacco use in the United States is jeopardized by this onslaught of e-cigarette use", Sharpless said. No single vaping device, ingredient or additive has been identified as the cause.

Mr Trump said his wife Melania, the first lady, had been involved in discussions about vaping because "she's got a son, she feels very strongly about it".

The FDA has had the authority to ban vaping flavours since 2016, but has previously resisted calls to take that step. "Don't vape, we don't like vaping, I don't like it".

In 2014, the Royal College of Physicians after a study stated that "e-cigarette aerosol contains far fewer carcinogens than tobacco smoke, and concluded that e-cigarettes "impart a lower potential disease burden" than traditional cigarettes". It's really not wonderful, that's one thing we can say definitely. Government health officials have called the rising in vaping an "epidemic".

The Food and Drug Administration announced plans to finalize a policy in the coming weeks that will enable it to remove many nontobacco flavored e-cigarettes from the market. Juul, one of the best known manufacturers, has grown into a huge business by selling mint, fruit and dessert flavored-nicotine products. The new policy would allow the FDA to remove flavored products from the market.

Most of us are well aware that vaping and smoking hurt our lungs.

Scott Gottlieb, who stepped down as FDA commissioner in April, said in a tweet that Juul bore particular responsibility for forcing the administration's hand.

"To deprive those smokers from access to e-cigarettes, which we know are substantially less harmful, I think is a awful decision", Neil McKeganey, of the UK-based Center for Substance Use Research - which is partly funded by the industry - told AFP.

Most experts agree the aerosol from e-cigarettes is less harmful than cigarette smoke since it doesn't contain most of the cancer-causing byproducts of burning tobacco.

Those with pre-existing lung or breathing conditions are also at a greater risk: if you have asthma or a related condition, the effects of secondhand vaping may be heightened.

Public officials are also running enquiry if the standard e-cigarettes are being tampered and have warned users not to tamper the device or buy products off the street.

Michael R. Bloomberg, the founder and majority owner of Bloomberg News parent Bloomberg LP, has campaigned and given money in support of a ban on flavored e-cigarettes and tobacco.
