Farmers affected by mental health issues urged to seek help

SUICIDE

The highest percentage of people who took their own lives were between 25 and 28 years old, 32 percent of the total, and 44 percent of cases had completed high school.

This report complies with World Health Organisation guidelines for responsible reporting on suicide. 6,507 suicides were registered last year, marking a 12 per cent rise on the previous year and the highest rate since 2002.

More than 5,300 people have had face-to-face appointments with Pieta's suicide-prevention service this year.

"We are predicting that the federal government's $15 million investment in improved and co-ordinated data collection and retrieval will reveal a higher official suicide rate than now recorded", the report says.

The report also found that almost three times as many men as women die by suicide in wealthy countries, in contrast to low- and middle-income countries, where the rates are more equal.

"Suicide was the second leading cause of death among young people aged 15-29 years, after road injury", said the World Health Organization in a statement. Among teenagers aged 15-19 years, suicide was the second leading cause of death among girls (after maternal conditions) and the third leading cause of death in boys (after road injury and interpersonal violence).

In a report released on the eve of World Suicide Prevention Day held yesterday, WHO calls on countries to identify pesticides commonly used by people for fatal poisoning and those with high hazardous effects for withdrawal. "The message is: ...if you're anxious about someone, such as a friend, family member or workmate, asking them directly about their feelings can help to save their life". The American Suicide Prevention Hotline is also available at 888-333-2377.

World Suicide Prevention Day is a reminder that society needs consistent and increasing advocacy for mental health resources so that people struggling with mental health disorders can find the help they need.

The online course can be completed in 45 minutes and is created to give people a basic understanding of suicide prevention issues and to increase knowledge and confidence about how we can all play a role in keeping people safe. "In Sri Lanka, for instance, bans are thought to have led to 93,000 fewer suicide deaths between 1995 and 2015", it adds.

Their personal experience will help support the Scottish Government's National Suicide Prevention Leadership Group.

The theme for the awareness week, which runs until Sunday, is: "Working Together to Prevent Suicide" and acknowledges the importance that a public health approach is needed to address suicide rates in Scotland.
