Former world number one Kim Clijsters to return to tennis in 2020

Her return is welcomed by WTA chairman and CEO Steve Simon, who told her website: "Kim Clijsters ranks among the greats of the game and her return to the Tour is exciting news for the WTA family and tennis fans around the world".

Clijsters won her first grand slam at the US Open in 2005, seven years into her professional career.

"I know that I'm not going to play - not even close to - a full season", Clijsters said, adding that her intention is to be ready for January. As a previous champion, she has the right under WTA rules to request wild-card admission into major tournaments, so she doesn't have to necessarily play all of the competitions needed to qualify for the Grand Slams.

Notoriously friendly, down-to-earth, and a favorite amongst her peers in the locker room, Clijsters hung up her racquet for good - or so she thought - after the 2012 US Open. Clijsters wanted to nurture her three children and become a stay-at-home. I think for me it's the challenge. "And honestly I miss that feeling", she said on Twitter.

"For the past seven years, I've been a full-time mum", Clijsters said in a video shared to social media.

The Belgium native defended her title at Flushing Meadows the following year and then won the Australian Open in 2011 en route to topping the world rankings for the first time since 2006. "I do really feel that's one thing that [affects] me too".

Okim Clijsters revealed that tennis-taking half in moms Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka had been an inspiration to her, as she announced a comeback on the age of 36 that caught your total sport with out note.

"Let's do this, let's come back one more time".

Clijsters, who turned professional in 1997, has stepped away from the sport twice, initially retiring in 2007 due to persistent injury troubles.

She is one of just six women to be simultaneously World No. 1 in singles and doubles. She will require to feature in three tournaments or earn 10 ranking points to re-establish a ranking.

Following back-to-back titles in NY in 2009 and 2010, she also added the 2011 Australian Open to her list of honours.

I'll be the hitting partner for your practice today.
