Golden Ray cargo ship: US Coastguard plans rescue for crew

Four crew members missing after cargo ship capsizes

Rescuers scoured the Georgia coast on Sunday for four missing crew members of a auto carrier cargo ship that overturned and caught fire, but the efforts ran into trouble amid the flames and instability of the ship, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

In a tweet Monday evening, the Coast Guard's 7th District Southeast, located in Miami, tweeted that "All crew members are accounted for".

Mr Reed said they were in relatively good condition "for having spent 34, 35 hours in the conditions they were in".

The 200m vehicle carrier is now stuck in the shipping channel, closing one of the busiest USA seaports for shipping automobiles.

Altamaha Riverkeeper, a group that works to protect water in the area from pollution, posted on Facebook that it will keep monitoring the salvage operations.

Atlanta-based WSB-TV reported that a rescue team heard noises coming from inside the ship on Monday morning.

Marine Traffic shows that the Golden Ray overturned as it was passed by another auto carrier entering St. Simons Sound.

"They were charged up knowing the people were alive", Reed said.

A @USCG Air Station Savannah helicopter crew and port partners rescued 20 people early this morning after the Golden Ray, a 656-foot vehicle carrier, was reported disabled and listing. However, rescuers initially had a hard time due to the ship's instability, which was made worse when a fire broke out in the vessel, reported the Washington Post.

The cause of the capsizing remained under investigation.

Lloyd Heflin told The Associated Press that the crew member was rescued just before 6 p.m. local time on Monday.

A South Korea foreign ministry statement said the trapped crew members had been isolated inside an engine room. They drilled a hole to communicate and found the crew members were "on board and OK", Heflin said.

The US Coast Guard says they will now begin tackling the removal of the vessel from the water.

A fire that broke out on board prevented rescuers from reaching the four South Koreans still trapped inside, Capt. John Reed, commander of the Coast Guard Sector Charleston, told the US-based news channel.

Reed said authorities are still working to address ongoing threats to the environment and the Port of Brunswick near the overturned ship.

At the time, the skies were clear and the weather calm, with a southerly breeze of only 8km per hour, according to National Weather Service records.

Volunteers from her organization served them lunch and helped those who wanted to attend Mass at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Scott Cornell, the COO of Glovis America, a subsidiary of Hyundai Glovis, told CNN the company follows global maritime regulations on properly securing its cargo during transport.

Georgia's Department of Economic Development says the Port of Brunswick is the No. 1 port in the United States for automobile imports.
