Mugabe burial in Zimbabwe 'sometime next week' - family spokesman

Mugabe died last week in a hospital in Singapore following months of an undisclosed illness.

George Charamba the Official Presidential Spokesperson shared the presser below.

The remains of the late former President Robert Mugabe has arrived in Zimbabwe and was received by his successor Emmerson Mnangagwa who heaped praises on his former boss as a revolutionary leader and an icon of pan Africanism.

"In politics we have had many differences but we are here to reflect on his contribution".

Prior to this, it was reported that Mugabe's body had arrived at Rufaro Stadium in Harare where the ceremony is taking place on Thursday afternoon.

"As his immediate family, we have also observed with shock that the government of Zimbabwe is attempting to coerce us to accept a programme for the funeral and burial of the late Robert Gabriel Mugabe, which is contrary to his wishes on how he wished to have his mortal remains interred".

The ongoing uncertainty over where Mugabe will be buried has sparked speculation of a disagreement between the government and Mugabe's wife and other family members.

Grace Mugabe is expected to stay beside the casket the entire time.

Mnangagwa calls on Zimbabweans to mourn Mugabe

But the family said traditional chiefs in his homestead in the Zvimba region should decide where he should be buried.

His family want him to rest in his rural home, but the government has declared him a "national hero" and reserved a grave for him at the Heroes' Acre shrine just outside Harare. His body was returned back to the capital city of Harare on Thursday.

A portrait of former president Robert Mugabe stands outside the room where his body lies in state.

It had always been expected that Mugabe would be buried at Heroes' Acre, a monumental burial location atop a prominent hill featuring a grandiose towering sculpture of guerrilla fighters that Mugabe built with help from North Korea.

Some family members are still bitter over Mugabe's ouster and the role played by Mnangagwa, a long-time ally from their days as guerrilla fighters who eventually turned against him.

Mr Mugabe was Zimbabwe's first leader after the country became independent in 1980.

Mnangagwa himself is under pressure after promising to attract investment and create jobs in a post-Mugabe era, with little success.
