Hong Kong protesters beg Trump: 'Liberate' our city

Hong Kong protests to target airport after night of violence

The fear within Hong Kong now is that the Chinese government wants to take away some of these freedoms that were promised to them when Britain handed over the colony in 1997.

Comparing the struggle of Hong Kong's pro-democracy protesters to the role of Berlin during the Cold War, activist Joshua Wong told an audience in the German capital that his city was now a bulwark between the free world and the "dictatorship of China".

Hong Kong police fired tear gas at protesters who built barricades, started blazes and paralyzed traffic in the territory's prime business area yesterday after a peaceful march to the U.S. consulate in a bid to ramp up worldwide pressure on Beijing.

Protesters in their Sunday march appealed to President Donald Trump to "stand with Hong Kong" and ensure Congress passes a bill that would impose economic sanctions and penalties on Hong Kong and mainland China officials found to suppress democracy and human rights in the city.

Currently, under the Hong Kong Policy Act introduced in 1992 by now-US Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell and passed by US Congress in the wake of Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989, the US has to treat Hong Kong as a separate entity apart from China.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on September 5 that USA lawmakers should stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and abandon the bill as the issue was purely China's internal affair.

A minority of protesters smashed subway station windows Sunday, and police responded with a handful of tear gas rounds, Fox News' Jonathan Hunt reports.

Earlier Saturday, a second "stress test" was scheduled by demonstrators to disrupt transportation to Hong Kong International Airport but it was thwarted by police.

Wong, who visited Taiwan last week, told reporters before he flew off to Germany and then the USA that he would continue to raise global awareness about Hong Kong's fight for democratic reforms.

The dramatic images in the heart of Hong Kong served as the latest reminder that three months of demonstrations against China's grip over the city are unlikely to end anytime soon.

While some American politicians on both sides of the aisle have expressed support for the democratic goals of the protesters, the Trump administration has maintained a more hands-off approach as it locks horns with China over trade.

Grandpa Wong says he understands why youngsters feel they have no choice but to protest.

Some university students continued their protest chains at lunchtime, with passing cars honking in support.

Protesters sang the U.S. national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner, and a new rallying cry of "five demands, not one less" - after one of their long-standing conditions for ending demonstrations was met earlier this week. Many activists are angry over Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam's refusal to grant an independent inquiry into accusations of police brutality during demonstrations. Several people were detained. Wong, a leader of Hong Kong's 2014 pro-democracy protest movement, was among several people detained last month and was charged with inciting people to join a protest in June. Last month, the airport was shut down for two days after protesters occupied the terminals, leading to violent clashes.

Mr Wong, a key figure in the anti-government protests that have now entered their 14th week, was released after a court declared his bail terms allowed for pre-planned travel and that his arrest was unfounded.

"Covering our right eye with our right hand shows that we are sympathetic and supportive to the girl who lost her right eye in the protests", he said.

Germany's foreign minister welcomed Wong's release and called it "a good signal".

His party said he would also be travelling to the United States and would return in late September, without giving details of his itinerary.
