Joker weightloss made Joaquin Phoenix go mad

Joaquin Phoenix as Joker

The movie, which has Joaquin Phoenix playing the hugely popular DC villain in what's said to be a very different take on the character, has had quite the reception at its Venice Film Festival premiere. Indiewire does not hesitate to write that the Joker is "the boldest and most exciting superhero movie since The Dark Night", while the Hollywood Reporter considers Joaquin Phoenix's performance to be the best of his career.

The movie, which is the first stand-alone film about the legendary comic book villain, follows the story of a failed stand-up comedian, Fleck, who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City.

Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera confirmed about the movie starring Joaquin Phoenix as Batman's nemesis.

Joaquin Phoenix wanted to make sure his version of the Joker "wasn't identifiable".

Lastly, Phoenix revealed the difficulties of finding the Joker's iconic laugh.

But the cackle was just one component of the character Phoenix was trying to create during filming - which he said changed nearly daily. "There was a lot of fear, yeah, but I always say there's motivating fear and debilitating fear".

Phoenix also went in-depth in how he developed his signature laugh for the role, saying it needed to be "something that's nearly painful. It's a part of him that is trying to emerge".

Phillips, known for frat house comedies including the "Hangover" trilogy and "Road Trip", set the film in the 1970s as a nod to the brooding atmosphere in the tough cinematic character studies of the time, like De Niro's "Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull" and "The King of Comedy". "We want to have the room to create what we want", the actor said.

"I didn't think I could do it".

He said it needed to be "something that's nearly painful".

This past weekend saw Joker not only appear to be a favorite among the press on hand to cover the film, but also a big victor once it made its big unveiling to the public. I love that kind of fear.

"You really go mad when you lose that much weight in that amount of time", he said.

Phillips continues, "He thought he was put here on this Earth to make people laugh and bring joy to the world, and he made a few bad decisions along the way, but no, his goal was not that..."
