MPs should secure a referendum before an election, says Watson

It might perhaps well presumably perhaps presumably also intensify Labour's Brexit chaos, striking the deputy chief on a collision route with Jeremy Corbyn, who wants a unhurried November election after which a Brexit referendum on a Labour deal.

BBC Newsnight political editor Nick Watt said he believed Mr Corbyn's aim was to "provide a home" for both Leave and Remain supporters at the next election but he could be forced to allow colleagues to campaign on both sides in the event of another referendum.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn used a speech to trade unions to add detail to his pledge to "put power in the hands of workers", not the "born-to-rule establishment that Johnson represents" - part of a narrative that scored well with voters at the last election in 2017.

The party opposes a no-deal Brexit and has promised another referendum on any deal for leaving the EU.

But Labour is expected to back one after MPs return to parliament following its suspension - either as soon as Boris Johnson complies with the law and requests another Article 50 extension, or if he refuses to do so, at which point Corbyn would likely push for a vote of no confidence in the government.

"If you are a worker with a boss who makes you work extra hours with no pay, or forces you into a risky situation, you deserve a government that fights for you", Corbyn said.

"Elections should never be single issue campaigns", he will say, suggesting vital issues such as the future of the NHS, economic inequality and crime will be "drowned out" by Prime Minister Boris Johnson's "do or die" Brexit message.

The 59-year-old, who announced on Sunday he would be standing down from the Commons after 18 years representing Bassetlaw, said: "That's not a good recipe for winning a General Election and in the North of England, Labour will pay a huge price".

Mr Watson will say that so significantly has changed because the initial referendum in 2016 it was "no more time a valid basis" for pinpointing Britain's long run and the priority should really be a new general public vote prior to an election.

He said: "In my constituency, in the most Labour wards, it was the most Brexit".

"They want to delay Brexit yet again, without further reference to those who voted for it ... and so now the house will move to adjourn and resume the state opening and the Queen's speech on October 14, and I hope the opposition will use that time to reflect".

"But shall I tell you who we're listening to?"

Speaking to the Trades Union Congress on Tuesday, Sir Keir Starmer will say that another referendum is the only way of "cleaning up the mess left by the Tories". Now Labour insists there should only be a vote if the number of potential outcomes are limited, preventing the British people from voting in a government the Labour leadership considers unacceptable. This speech does not reflect Labour policy in any way.

Tom Watson has sparked fury by calling for a second European Union referendum sooner than a protracted-established election.
