North Korea again tests 'super-large' rocket launcher: KCNA

Korean Central News Agency on Aug. 25 2019 shows a

The missile tests also come at a time of increasing friction between Japan and South Korea, two key USA allies in the region.

The missiles flew a distance of more than 330 kilometers (205 miles) at an altitude of 50-60 kilometers, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. Tuesday's firing was the 10th weapon test North Korea has conducted this year.North Korea had first fired multiple short-range missiles in May, in what was an apparent frustration over the breakdown of the Hanoi summit in Vietnam in February, where the reclusive country and the USA had reportedly failed to sort out their differences regarding sanction waivers.

North Korea on Tuesday fired projectiles into the sea, South Korea's military services reported, hrs following Pyongyang mentioned it was ready to maintain working-level talks this month with the United States.

Choe's statement and the following projectile launches were apparently aimed at pressuring the United States to make concessions when the North Korea-U.S. talks restart. "Right now, the major threat is coming from North Korea and I think we really need to be watertight among the US, Japan and South Korea", he said.

"We're disappointed that he is continuing to conduct these short-range tests".

At their June 30 meeting in the truce village of Panmunjeom, Kim agreed with U.S. President Donald Trump that Washington and Pyongyang would resume talks within weeks, but they have yet to take place.

Pyongyang said Tuesday before the launch that it was willing to restart nuclear talks with the USA later this month, but warned that chances of a deal could end unless Washington takes a fresh approach.

On Monday, the North's vice foreign minister Choe Son Hui said in a statement carried by KCNA that the country had "willingness to sit with the U.S. side for comprehensive discussions of the issues we have so far taken up" later this month, at a time and place to be determined.

Questioned about the proposal for reduce-level talks in September, Trump instructed reporters: "I have a very very good romance with Chairman Kim".

"If the U.S. side fingers again the worn-out scenario which has nothing to do with the new calculation method at the DPRK-U.S. working negotiation to be held with so much effort, the DPRK-U.S. dealings may come to an end", she said, referring to North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea. I constantly say having conferences is a great issue.

The period suggested by North Korea would correspond with the United Nations Standard Assembly in NY. Such a test, which could involve the transporter erector (TEL) launcher seen in accompanying photos, would improve the survivability of the weapon and confound USA and South Korean military planners.

Kim and US President Donald Trump adopted a vaguely-worded statement on the "complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula" at their first summit in Singapore in June past year, but little progress has since been made on dismantling Pyongyang's nuclear program.

USA officials have known as North Korea's latest short-array missile launches provocations, although Trump himself has prevented criticising them.
