'Silenced!' - MPs stage protest as parliament is suspended for five weeks

Tearful House of Commons Speaker John Bercow to stand down amid Brexit chaos

Bercow said the timing of his departure would mean that MPs would have some knowledge of the candidates to replace him.

Rhondda Labour MP Chris Bryant has confirmed he will stand in the race to succeed John Bercow as Commons Speaker.

John Bercow is set to become the first Speaker in 230 years not to be offered a peerage when he quits next month.

But that has not satisfied members of Parliament who have dealt Johnson six defeats in six days, blocking a no-deal Brexit and then rejecting a government motion for snap elections on Monday night, in what was the final vote of the parliamentary session.

It all ended around 2 a.m. (9 p.m. ET) when opposition lawmakers lined up to shake the Speaker's hand, capping off an acrimonious day in Parliament.

Mr Bercow said if he had waited to stand down after the next election, newly-elected MPs would not be "informed" enough to make the right choice. General elections are to be held five years after the last, unless the government loses a vote of no confidence or 2/3 of members agree to early elections. With Bercow, it looks as though Brexit has claimed another political career. "And whatever you do when you finally step down from Parliament, you do so with the thanks of a very large number of people".

Though the speaker usually runs unopposed in an election, Leadsom said in the Mail on Sunday that Bercow had "failed" in his role as "a politically impartial, independent umpire of proceedings".

SNP MPs began singing "Scots Wha Hae" - considered by the party to be the alternative national anthem - on the Commons benches, while Labour MPs also sang the Red Flag before SNP MP Gavin Newlands jokingly appealed to Conservative MPs to sing - with no response.

Bercow said he would not contest the next election if parliament voted later on Monday in favour of calling one.

Earlier, opposition lawmakers said they would not support the Prime Minister's bid for early elections on October 15, stressing the need to enforce the new law that would prevent Britain from leaving the European Union without an agreement. If, as expected, lawmakers reject the government's attempt to call an election, he said he would quit on October 31 - the Brexit deadline that lawmakers voted last week to postpone.
