Team USA loses to France in FIBA World Cup quarterfinals

Frank-Ntilikina

Team USA saw its 58-game winning streak in global tournaments featuring NBA players end Wednesday with an 89-79 loss to France in the quarterfinals of the FIBA World Cup in Dongguan, China, ensuring USA Basketball can not medal.

The loss snapped a streak of 58 straight victories for Team USA at the FIBA World Cup.

France will face Argentina in the semifinals. Virtually all of the NBA's top American stars elected to skip the World Cup, which FIBA moved to an odd year for the first time since the 1960s. They already had qualified for next year's Summer Games in Tokyo. Ntilikina scored 11 for France. Mitchell has plenty of experience as a lead guard in big moments, carrying Utah in the postseason both as a rookie in 2018 and in his second National Basketball Association season a year ago.

Having ground out a barely deserved 93-92 overtime win over Turkey in the preliminary group stage, there was to be no escape for the US this time against an athletic French side who dominated them in every department.

The loss also ended Team USA's impressive winning streak when National Basketball Association players comprise its roster.

Mitchell wasn't the only Jazz player that turned heads at the World Cup as Rudy Gobert was a major reason that the U.S.is headed home.

Nando De Colo scored 18 for France.

Shenanigans in the press and the revenge factor aside, though, Gobert was clearly the best player on the floor in this contest.

Donovan Mitchell provided an antidote to France's imposing defense, at least for the first three quarters of Wednesday's contest.

On the other side of the coin are Celtics fans, who might understandably feel slightly concerned following the United States' elimination from the World Cup, considering the fact that four of Boston's key contributors were on Team USA's roster. Jayson Tatum (sprained left ankle) missed his fourth consecutive game. While Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart were productive, neither jumped out in a way to indicate that they were on the verge of a breakout season.
