Tesla driver appears to fall asleep behind wheel of moving auto

Video: Man Asleep At Wheel As Self-Driving Tesla Speeds At 90 Kmph

Tesla notes that according to their data driving with Autopilot on is safer than without, and noted that the videos of drivers happily sleeping behind the wheel is likely the result of pranksters playing a risky game of scaring fellow drivers, and overall likely damaging the EV cause.

Another more recent video shows the process on the Tesla Model 3.

The video now going viral shows a woman in the passenger seat of a Tesla as it hurtles down a highway, head thrown back, dead asleep, probably drooling.

Randall took cellphone video of the incident.

Mr Randall said he did not call the police on the vehicle, which was travelling 55 to 60mph, but state police said they are aware of his video.

"I thought I should record this, then I thought I shouldn't record this because it's also unsafe, but it was just so weird I just had to get it on video", Randall said.

Both the driver and his female passenger appear to be sleeping as the Tesla cruises along in self-driving mode. Other Tesla drivers have recorded videos of them pretending to be asleep or "disappearing" as a hoax while using AutoPilot.

According to The Guardian, state police said they are aware of the video.

"Many of these videos appear to be risky pranks or hoaxes. At highway speeds, drivers typically receive warning every 30 seconds or less if their hands aren't detected on the wheel".

Last week, a National Transportation Safety Board report found the driver of a Tesla was using the car's Autopilot system when a vehicle in front of him suddenly changed lanes and he didn't have time to react before crashing into a fire truck near Los Angeles.
