Trump says expanded U.S. gun background checks under consideration

Sen. Mitch Mc Connell speaks during a news briefing Sept. 10 2019 at the Capitol in Washington DC

The House Judiciary Committee voted on Tuesday to approve gun violence prevention legislation as Congress faces pressure to take action in the wake of recent mass shootings. He also took a dig at Pelosi and Democrats, using a well-worn Republican talking point.

But at least one Republican, Sen.

It was not clear whether the senators intend to push a carbon-copy of the Manchin-Toomey bill from 2013 or an altered version. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said, adding, "The president's still very encouraging and I believe sincerely wants to move forward and do something". "If you are irritated with my impatience it is mainly because people today are dying due to the fact Senator McConnell hasn't acted". They do not reflect the mainstream of where Americans are.

"If you don't think that's going to cause a significant amount of problems when you are actually on the ground ... you're nuts", Armstrong said.

"Background checks on all gun sales are a common-sense solution with overwhelming public support and are a critical step toward stemming the gun violence epidemic in this country", the letter continued. Mass shootings are defined as those in which four or more people were killed or injured, excluding the perpetrators. Committee Democrats say they expect the bills to reach the House floor in the next few weeks.

However they depicted the president as engaged and inspiring, with Toomey saying Trump had a robust "interest in doing something meaningful" to stop gun violence, although he has not endorsed any particular strategy. It includes a so-called red-flag law aimed at making it easier for law enforcement to take away guns from those deemed unsafe by a judge; a measure barring people convicted of hate crimes from buying guns; and legislation barring, for civilian use, magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds. "A background check on commercial gun sales does not curb the second amendment rights", Toomey said. There are an terrible lot of people providing unsolicited advice to the president on this - probably solicited advice as well.

The president initially expressed support in early August for "very meaningful background checks" after deadly mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, but stopped short of endorsing the bill passed by the House.

Senate Democrats involved in the White House talks said it remained unclear what Trump might accept.

The Kentucky Republican said the White House's Eric Ueland briefed senators on the topic at their weekly lunch Tuesday.

GOP Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina said that he would be willing to consider bills like Manchin-Toomey if he thinks there's bipartisan agreement.

"We're getting to the witching hour" for a decision, Murphy said.
