U.S. fight back in style to win Walker Cup

Alex Fitzpatrick and Conor Purcell embrace after scoring the first point of the day beating USA during day one of the 2019 Walker Cup at Royal Liverpool Golf Club Hoylake

The United States retained the Walker Cup with a 15.5-9.5 victory over Great Britain and Ireland at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake.

After the four morning foursomes were shared, the home side won five of the eight afternoon singles for a 7-5 lead in the two-day biennial contest against America.

The Americans won two of three matches and tied the other in foursomes.

Cole Hammer was 3 up through six holes on his way to a 6-and-5 victory over Conor Purcell, the shortest match of the week.

Almost 11,000 fans flocked to Hoylake over the two-day match which ended with the US winning the Walker Cup away from home for the first time since 2007 at Royal County Down.

The USA responded immediately with John Pak edging out Euan Walker by 2&1 to ensure that the Florida State University student finished undefeated in the match overall with three points from three matches.

They came from two down after three holes to defeat Alex Fitzpatrick and Conor Purcell 2&1.

After Isaiah Salinda triumphed by two holes against Alex Fitzpatrick, the two sides were level at 9½-9½, before Stewart Hagestad, who was a member of the winning American team two years ago, nudged his side in front after dominating against Harry Hall to win 5&3.

John Augenstein hit back for team US with a 2&1 win over Conor Purcell taking it to 4-3 in the match overall.

Although they dropped a hole at the 12, a birdie on the 15 restored their two-hole lead and they never looked back to give the visiting team its second point.

Scott then claimed a notable scalp for GB&I, defeating US Amateur champion Ogletree by one hole in a match where the Nairn golfer fired in six birdies.

In the final foursomes Alex Smalley and Brandon Wu of the U.S. never really looked in trouble in their match against Thomas Plumb and Tom Sloman.

GB&I captain Watson, who played in the same team as Justin Rose, when he became the youngest-ever to play in the Walker Cup in 1997, said: "It was a pretty good day".

"I honestly thought that these guys would let their talent come to the surface", said U.S. captain Nathaniel Crosby, the 1981 U.S. Amateur champion, who was born and raised in Hillsborough. "... Even though they're 0-2 going in, they might have the winning putt or the winning moment, and I put them in that spot for that very reason".
