Police secures the area after a shooting in the eastern German city of Halle

Two people have been killed in a shooting in the eastern German city of Halle and police said they were looking for suspects who fled the scene.

Police said that at least one person has been detained but asked residents to "remain alert". The attack took place near both a synagogue and a kebab shop, local media and a witness said. "We are urgently investigating and are asking people to stay in their homes", Halle police tweeted.

Police said that shots were also fired in Landsberg, about 15 miles (just under 10 miles) from Halle.

Police gave no details about the target of the attack and there were varying reports about what it could be.


Other witnesses told Mitteldeutsche Zeitung that the attack unfolded right outside a kebab shop and that some shots were fired from inside a vehicle.

According to Bild daily, the shooting took place in front of a synagogue in the Paulus district, and a hand grenade was also flung into a Jewish cemetery.
