3 sexually transmitted diseases hit new highs again in US

Treponema pallidum the bacterium responsible for syphilis

According to a press release from the National Coalition of STD Directors, the drastic increases are largely due to federal, state, and local funding cutbacks resulting in a "public health infrastructure that is ill-equipped to handle this growing public health threat".

The trends in California echoed a report released Tuesday by the CDC, which said combined cases of gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis in the us had risen for the fifth consecutive year.

There were 19 stillbirths or 3 neonatal deaths associated with congenital syphilis previous year, according to the report.

Torrone added that the combined numbers mark "the most cases" ever recorded since monitoring began in the United States.

Health officials say the highest rates of STDs are among people ages 15-24, and chlamydia and gonorrhea are the most commonly reported STDs in California.

And the numbers are certainly an underestimate, she added: STDs often have no symptoms, leaving people unaware they are infected.

And, noted the CDC, they are seeing an alarming rise in newborn deaths from congenital syphilis, with almost 100 infants dying of the disease in 2018. Primary and secondary syphilis has increased 71% since 2014 to over 35,063 cases.

"The subject of STD rates and why they remain so high is a discussion with much nuance and no single, simple answer", Wyand noted.

"STDs can come at a high cost for babies and other vulnerable populations", said Jonathan Mermin, M.D., M.P.H., director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention. And while reported rates of gonorrhea and syphilis have been higher historically, they had been on a downward trend for decades until recently. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to infertility, ectopic pregnancy and chronic pelvic pain. Despite public health efforts to improve access to treatment and testing the prevalence of STDs continues to climb in recent years, which according to the CDC report represents "an underestimated opponent in the public health battle".

Over 115,000 syphilis cases were reported, including more than 1,300 infections among newborns.

The rise in STDs and failure to adequately support prevention programs also threatens our nation's Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative.

When it comes to gonorrhea, one of the concerns is its ever-increasing resistance to antibiotics. Then, health-department employees have to follow up with them to be sure they get treated-with as many as three doses of an antibiotic.
