Annual CIBC Run for the Cure Raises $116K in Windsor

Thousands run for the cure in Vancouver, hoping to ‘make breast cancer beatable’

"It's because of the funds Canadians raise through the CIBC Run for the Cure that we know more than ever how to prevent, diagnose, treat and live with and beyond breast cancer, and have been able to help reduce the mortality rate by nearly half since it peaked in 1986".

"I tortured myself. Looking back at it now, I wish I didn't do that to myself but I think that's the part you have to go through to heal". Since rates peaked in the mid-80s, the mortality rate for breast cancer has decreased by 44 per cent and the five-year survival rate has increased to 87 per cent.

"Through the run for the cure, we have sponsored just awesome amounts of research over the years, right across Canada", Webb said. "That's why I'm here, is to hopefully save other people's lives". "Along with participants and volunteers from coast-to-coast, together, we are a force-for-life in the face of breast cancer".

"So I've done this journey many times", Clark said as she stood on a stage near the campus and spoke to the participants.

About 4,000 people took part in the event, Iacozza said, which aims to raise money for breast cancer research, support programs, health education and advocacy initiatives. "We must keep investing in the breast cancer cause so that more and more people can continue to survive their diagnoses and enjoy a better quality of life".

Since 1992, Run for the Cure has raised nearly $445 million for breast cancer research.

"It's wonderful to see everyone come out and help and be there for breast cancer and every year is so different from when I had mine".

Volunteer committee co-run director Ashley MacDonald said this year's run in Brandon attracted 303 participants, about 50 more than last year.

"It was a great turnout this year", MacDonald said. "There was no rain, no snow".

While this year's figures weren't available on Sunday, the Brandon run usually raises approximately $30,000, she said. "In fact, we all just cheered it together".

The CIBC Run for the Cure is held in 57 communities across Canada, raising $16 million a year to fund breast cancer research projects.
