Bernie Sanders Says He Will Slow Pace Of Campaign Following Heart Attack

Sen. Bernie Sanders is home in Vermont after being treated for a heart attack in Las Vegas

His wife, Jane O'Meara Sanders listens at right.

He urged others to listen to their symptoms.

Senator Bernie Sanders Tuesday gave reporters an update on his health following treatment for a heart attack on the campaign trail in Nevada last week. I've been doing, in some cases, three or four rallies a day, going all over the state, Iowa, New Hampshire, wherever.

'I don't think it helps or hurts, ' Sanders, 78, said of the health scare, adding that he was on his way to see a new cardiologist in Burlington. "But as soon as they realize that he's just as or more energetic than he was before, I'm sure people will realize that this was nothing".

He did not however say he would withdraw from the race to be the Democratic presidential nominee. But it hasn't commented on if or when he'll resume campaigning before that - or what his next steps will be. Sanders was already facing questions about his health and has seen his recent poll numbers decline compared with those of Elizabeth Warren, his chief competitor for the Democratic party's progressive wing.

His campaign also downplayed any skepticism that his ailments would have a negative impact on his presidential run. "After two and a half days in the hospital, I feel great, and after taking a short time off, I look forward to getting back to work". "Probably not doing four rallies a day", Sanders answered when a reporter asked him what he meant.

'And yet I, in the last month or two, just was more tired than I usually have been and I should have listened to those symptoms, ' Sanders said. "And I should have listened to those symptoms". Later, they acknowledged a heart attack prompted the surgery.

And they hinted changes would be coming to better keep their candidate healthy.

"I must confess, I was dumb", the 2020 presidential candidate said outside his home in Burlington, Vt.

"Make no mistake, Sen".

Levi Sanders, the son of Bernie Sanders, in 2018. Doctors inserted two stents to open a clogged artery in his heart.

Rainè Riggs, the daughter-in-law of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, died Saturday shortly after being diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer, according to Lee & Martin Funeral Home in Burgettstown, Pa. Dr. Riggs was 46. The campaign would not confirm details about the Senator's well being while he was still in the hospital, and did not say whether he'd had a heart attack until after he'd been dispatched days later.
