Brexit deal hopes hang on British breakfast with Barnier

The European Parliament's chief Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt gestures as he addresses a press conference with the European Parliament president after Britain initiated the process to leave the EU at the European Parliament in Brussels on March 2

Johnson said that there was a "pathway" to a belated deal to stave off a chaotic and costly no-deal Brexit on October 31, while Varadkar said the meeting was "very positive".

Kate Garraway, 52, was joined by her Good Morning Britain co-host Ben Shephard, 44, to present the show today and the pair interviewed Gavin Williamson, 43, in light of the Brexit deadline looming and what deal the Prime Minister has on the table.

But he could be forced to seek to delay Brexit for a third time if he fails to agree a deal by next week's summit, thanks to a law passed by rebellious MPs last month.

The leaders gave few details of the meeting but in a brief exchange with reporters, Varadkar described the mood as "positive". But he cautioned there could still be obstacles along the way, after a more than three-year game of high-stakes political snakes and ladders. Johnson has vowed Britain will end its five-decade membership of the European Union on October 31, with or without agreeing exit terms. But let's assume that Boris Johnson's deal (whatever it is) does not succeed - either because the negotiations break down or the European Parliament or House of Commons refuse to pass it.

The two sides are tussling over the backstop agreement - an insurance policy championed by the EU to keep Northern Ireland in the bloc's customs union in order to prevent the creation of a physical border which could threaten peace on the island - which the United Kingdom argues is undemocratic.

He proposes Northern Ireland stay aligned to the EU's single market but remain in a separate UK-wide customs territory, envisaging customs but no regulatory checks on the frontier.

"We will only ever consider supporting arrangements that are in Northern Ireland's long-term economic and constitutional interests".

Tusk said "there is no guarantee of success and the time is practically up" but insisted both sides should use every opportunity available ahead of Britain's scheduled October 31 departure date.

French President Emmanuel Macron voiced frustration with the issue that has dominated in the bloc since 2016.

The Cabinet minister said that no one community in Northern Ireland would have a veto over Brexit proposals.
