England is "nowhere near" obesity goal, says CMO report

Healthy breakfast. Banana almond smoothie with cinnamon and oat flakes and coconut milk in glass jars

Christopher Snowdon, head of lifestyle economics at the Institute of Economic Affairs think-tank, said: "The suggestion that it be a crime to eat a sandwich on a train brings Dame Sally's tenure as Chief Medical Officer to a fittingly authoritarian conclusion".

Professor Dame Sally Davies used her final report to demand bolder action from ministers, including stricter regulation of food companies that seek to manipulate children.

Professor Davies said, 'The unavoidable fact is that over time our environment has become very unhealthy without us realising.

"We are working with councils to tackle child obesity locally through new and ground-breaking programmes, cutting large amounts of sugar from food and soft drinks, and investing millions to give children opportunities to exercise in schools".

As mentioned earlier, she also recommends that all publicly-funded sporting facilities and major sporting events only advertise and sell low calorie, low fat, salt and or sugar products, and supply free and accessible drinking water.

The idea has been hailed as a courageous idea to help tackle the spread of childhood obesity - but also criticised as a nanny-state overreaction. However we have to do not forget that most limitations to "healthy eating" aren't resulting from a scarcity of schooling or consciousness that on stability, most of us needs to be consuming our greens and shifting extra - they're created by the society and surroundings we dwell in.

Dame Sally's report said 1.2 million children are now clinically obese, with some suffering Type 2 diabetes, asthma and musculoskeletal pain, as well as mental health problems, such as depression, she said.

By making snacking on public transport a difficulty, we're reinforcing the (incorrect) presumption that weight, and well being, is one thing we will all management - that it's merely a matter of non-public accountability.

She also pointed to a rise in snacking and a culture in which "excess weight is now often accepted as normal".

- Curb auto speed limits near schools and homes to help improve air quality and encourage children to walk or cycle.

Addressing food companies, she added: "I want to see our children's health, not companies' profits, put at the forefront of government policy".

Make free drinking water available in takeaways, food shops and restaurants.

In response to the report, the Food & Drink Federation said the industry wanted the government to support its work in reducing salt, sugars and calories.

"Cheap unhealthy food options now take centre stage in our lives and in our shops", wrote Dame Sally.

Not everyone agrees with Dame Sally's comments though.

She acknowledged it modified into "crucial that kids are vaccinated", adding: "I take note looking out after two kids as they died from measles".

Responding to the findings, Mr Hancock said: "Professor Dame Sally Davies has done more than anyone to promote the health of the nation over a decade as CMO".

Public Health England (PHE) says severely obese children are at risk of developing a number of serious acute and chronic health problems, including Type 2 diabetes.

"The Government ambition is to halve childhood obesity by 2030 - in England, we are nowhere near achieving this", she writes in her report.
