F-16 jet crashes over western Germany

U.S. fighter jet crashes in Germany

On 8 October, an F16 fighter jet belonging to the US Air Force crashed in Germany not far from a US military base near the town of Spangdahlem.

Public broadcaster SWR reported earlier that the crash had happened near the city of Trier, not far from Rammstein, a major USA airbase in Germany.

According to the statement, the F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jet crashed around 3:00 p.m. during a routine training sortie near Zemmer.

The pilot was able to escape via the ejector seat and was rushed to hospital, according to Volksfreund, and suffered minor injuries. The accident was recognised as having been caused by vehicle defects.

Residents were told to steer clear of the crash site.

At least 24 F-16 fighter jets and around 4,000 U.S. troops are stationed at the Spangdahlem air base.

Mayor of Zemmer said the fighter jet had gone over a piece of forest to the ground.

It said the crash happened about 20 kilometres north of Trier in Trier-Saarburg district, in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Around 4,000 USA soldiers are also stationed at the base.

One of the pilots was killed, while the other ejected to safety.

The aircraft was assigned to the 480th Fighter Squadron at the base.
