Family dies taking a selfie at Indian water dam

Four members of Indian family drown while trying to take selfie

A family outing to a dam ended in tragedy after four members of the same family drowned while trying to take a selfie.

The incident took place at Pambar dam in the southern state, according to S Prabhakar, a senior police official from the district of Krishnagiri.

That study found that there have been 259 recorded deaths of people taking selfies between 2011 and 2017.

But when the group posed at the edge of the dam, as Prabhuby took a photograph, the five slipped into the water after the youngest in the group, a 14-year-old girl, lost her footing.

The bodies of the deceased were recovered immediately.

The issue has drawn the attention of authorities, which have taken to implementing no-selfie zones in areas deemed high risk.

Indian couple Vishnu Viswanath, 29, and Meenakshi Moorthy, 30, fell to their deaths while taking a selfie in the Yosemite National Park a year ago.

Only one of them was able to be rescued from the water by the husband, while the others were lost under the water.

India accounted for around half of the 259 selfie fatalities reported from October 2011 to November 2017, according to a study by researchers associated with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences past year, whose findings were published in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care.

Last month, a woman reportedly fell 200 ft (60m) to her death while taking a snap of herself on a clifftop in western India.

They found that the most selfie deaths occurred in India, followed by Russian Federation, the USA and Pakistan.

The mean age of the victims was 22.9 years old with about half the total selfie deaths occurring among the 20 to 29-year-old age group.

Vishnu Viswanath, 29, and Meenakshi Moorthy, 30, fell to their deaths while taking a selfie in California.

Researchers noted that the leading cause of selfie-related death was due to drowning.
