NASA said in a statement on Twitter it was saddened by Leonov's death.

In March 1965, Leonov became the world's first man to enter outer space. Ed White, who floated free of Gemini 4 later that same year.

His spacesuit had inflated so much in the vacuum of space that he could not get back into the spacecraft.

Commander of the Soviet crew of Soyuz, Alexei Leonov (L) and commander of the American crew of Apollo, Thomas Stafford (R), shake hands 17 July 1975 in the space, somewhere over Western Germany, after the Apollo-Soyuz docking maneuvers. The two remained lifelong friends after the mission, and Apollo-Soyuz set the stage for later cooperation between the two Cold War superpowers in the subsequent Shuttle-Mir program and the International Space Station.

Alexei Leonov was born on May 30, 1934, in Listvyanka village.

The future cosmonaut had a strong artistic talent and even thought about going to art school before he enrolled in a pilot training course and, later, an aviation college.

On the Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975, Leonov met with U.S. astronauts in space and gave TV viewers tours of their respective crafts, the first time Soviet and USA cosmonauts collaborated in space.

The two astronauts continued to replace nickel-hydrogen batteries with newer, more powerful lithium-ion batteries on the far end of the station's port truss.

Leonov was also supposed to be the first man to land on the moon.

"This is a loss for the whole planet", said Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko.

"One of the finest people I have ever known", former Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield tweeted on Friday.

His funeral will be held October 15 at Mytishchi Military Memorial cemetery outside Moscow.
