Fox News Terminates Trey Gowdy

Rep. Trey Gowdy arrives for a closed session with Donald Trump Jr. before the House Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill

Since leaving the U.S. Congress, Gowdy - once a vocal proponent of Congressional oversight of the executive branch - has reportedly switched sides and will be defending President Donald Trump, who is being investigated by Congress for allegations of wrongdoing. His legal skills and his advocacy will serve the President well.

As chair of the House committee tasked with investigating the 2012 terrorist attack on an American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, Gowdy vaulted into the national spotlight for his intense and critical questions about whether then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton could have prevented the attack or dealt with it more effectively. Gowdy also contradicted Trump previous year, saying there's no evidence that the Federal Bureau of Investigation planted a "spy" in Trump's 2016 campaign, as Trump repeatedly claimed.

Gowdy, who became chairman of the House Oversight Committee after the Benghazi panel finished its work in 2016, was largely hands-off in scrutinizing the Trump administration, including a mostly dormant investigation into possible ties between Russian Federation and Trump's campaign.

Trump tweeted in December 2015 after Gowdy endorsed one of his primary rivals, Sen.

Gowdy also might have been unwittingly auditioning for the job through his commentary on Fox News, the channel Trump favors.

In March 2018, the outgoing lawmaker told Fox News in response to Trump-attorney John Dowd calling on the Justice Department to end former special counsel Robert Mueller's probe: "If you have an innocent client, Mr. Dowd, act like it".

Trump's personal attorney, Jay Sekulow, confirmed in a statement tonight that Gowdy would serve as counsel to the president.

However, by Wednesday evening, Sekulow officially announced Gowdy's appointment.

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., a Gowdy friend and Trump supporter, called Gowdy "a welcome addition" to Trump's legal team.

As a member of Congress, Gowdy insisted he had never had so much as a phone conversation with Trump, not even when Trump was ostensibly considering him for jobs.

Sources suggested Gowdy might have been convinced to sit down with Trump at the urging of Mulvaney, who has since last December been serving as the acting chief of staff. Mulvaney and Gowdy have been close for years, especially since entering the U.S. House together in 2011, alongside Scott, who was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 2013. "I just didn't know what it would be".
