Gauff Beats Bertens in Linz For First Top 10 Win

Teenager Coco Gauff reaches first WTA final in Linz

Gauff becomes the youngest player to reach a WTA final since Czech Republic's Nicole Vaidisova won the Tashkent Open in 2004, also aged 15.

After toppling Stefanie Voegele, Cori passed Kateryna Kozlova to advance into the last eight where she got the opportunity to face the top-10 opponent and the WTA Finals contender Kiki Bertens.

The Latvian has endured a miserable season and has dropped outside the top 70 but, working with former Wimbledon victor Marion Bartoli, this week has seen a resurgence.

The 15-year-old Gauff, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon and third round at the U.S. Open, earned her first win over a top-10 player against the eighth-ranked Bertens. "My first final, a lot of firsts for me here, so I hope I can keep this going".

'This kind of proves I'm able to hang in on this level and I'm really proud of myself today'.

The American was fortunate to advance to the second round of the Linz Open after getting a lucky loser draw less than an hour before Tuesday's match was set to begin.

"It's insane", he said after the match.

"Last year around this time I was playing a juniors Grade 1 [tournament], and I lost in the quarterfinals there, in Mexico", Gauff added.

Having dropped just one set in her main draw matches in Linz this week, Gauff has already ensured a place in the top 100 when the new WTA rankings are released on Monday.

Gauff showed real fighting spirit in the final game to serve out for victory, saving three crunch break points and coming through on her second match point.

Her mother arrived in time to watch her daughter, flying in from Luxembourg after arriving from Florida.
