Google Maps offers voice guidance for those with impaired vision

Google Maps rolling out detailed voice guidance for walking directions

This guidance is now rolling out in English for the United States and in Japanese for Japan. So, it will tell you how long it will be until your next turn, the direction you're walking in and also warn if you're nearing any major intersection or crossroad.

Google on Thursday launched a new feature that gives users with vision impairments more detailed voice guidance. This feature could help people who are blind or have low vision explore new places, said Wakana Sugiyama, a business analyst in Google's Tokyo office who was an adviser and tester for the project. A new feature that gives people the ability to receive more detailed voice guidance will be rolled out to Google Maps starting today.

"Going someplace new and unfamiliar can be an intimidating experience without sight to guide you", she continued.

But it doesn't mean that this feature can not be used or helpful for people who are totally normal.

Sugiyama further says, "With this feature, I can navigate the streets of Tokyo with more comfort and confidence". Announcements include whether or not the user is on the correct route, the distance until the next turn, the walking direction, approaching large intersections, re-routing when necessary, and more. "And if I accidentally leave my route, I'll get a spoken notification that I'm being rerouted". Google Maps will add support for other countries and languages. But people who can see just fine can also take advantage of the new feature to enjoy walking directions without having to continuously check the screen for information.

For those of you in the USA and Japan, Detailed Voice Guidance rolls out from today on Android and iOS. You need to make your way to Navigation inside Settings and after that make it possible for In-depth voice guidance from the Strolling options section.

Right this moment is the flip of Google Maps, an software that everyone knows and that helps us transfer round daily.
