Hands-On with Spotify's Siri Integration and Apple TV App

Microsoft News app update fixes annoying iOS 13.1 hyperlink bug

The Microsoft News app updated to Version 3.2.27 for Apple's iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches today.

The Spotify mobile app has gotten an update that includes Siri support for all iPhone and iPad users, after the feature was beta tested last month.

Finally, the official Spotify app is now available on Apple TV. In addition to listening with Spotify, you can now launch music in Pandora and get directions in Google Maps or Waze. And, in an extra little perk, Spotify will default to "Data Saver" mode if you have your device's Low Data mode turned on.

With iOS 13, Siri is becoming more open to services that compete with Apple's own. Moreover, Spotify appears to be using AirPlay 1.0 still, which means there are a few seconds of delay between your requests and the time music starts or stops playing. Even before that Spotify butted heads with the company who made users pay more to sign up to Spotify on an iPhone than if they used a computer or a different smartphone. This long-requested feature follows our other apps on TV platforms including Android TV, Samsung Tizen, Amazon Fire TV and Roku. When toggled on, apps that are optimized for the mode use less data than they normally would. That allows you to say things like "Play (album, track or playlist) on Spotify", "Play the latest song from (artist) on Spotify", or "Spotify (insert name) playlist". SiriKit support for music apps is an iOS 13 feature, and Apple hasn't released iOS 13 for its smart speaker yet, which remains on iOS 12.4.

Spotify has lengthy said that Apple engages in anti-competitive enterprise practices in the case of its app platform, which is created to favor its personal apps and companies, like Apple Music, it says. This functionality - at least for now - doesn't seem to be incompatible with Apple Watch watches.

Spotify Technology SA filed an antitrust complaint against Apple in the European Union in March, but the contact with the committee marks its first known participation in congressional inquiries into the iPhone maker, whose Apple Music streaming service is Spotify's biggest rival.
