Hard Rock Hotel collapse: 1 dead, 18 injured in New Orleans today

Emergency management workers tell the Times-Picayune that three people were transported to a hospital and there may be more patients.

New Orleans Fire Department spokesperson Tim McConnell said the structure of the upper building remains very unstable.

During a press conference, officials said that the building is still unstable and that a "further collapse is still possible". They were bringing in a search and rescue team and drones to look for the people who were still missing.

"It is unsupported and very risky", McConnell said.

CBS affiliate WWLT shared video of the collapse which showed construction workers running for their lives as the parts of the hotel came crashing down.

The fire department is working to evacuate nearby buildings, particularly apartment complexes.


It's unclear what caused the collapse.

The building collapse was caught in a dramatic video.

Authorities urged people to follow NOLA Ready on social media, which will tweet out updates.

The building was under construction at the corner of Rampart Street and Canal Street, a broad boulevard just outside the Quarter, lined with restaurants hotels and retailers.

"We're praying for the individuals who remain unaccounted for", John Bel Edwards, the governor of Louisiana, said at the press conference.

"It sounded like a - I don't know how to describe it - like a building coming down", said Matt Worges, according to Nola.com. The company planned to build 350 hotel rooms, four meeting spaces, two ballrooms plus 62 one- and two-bedroom units available for purchase.
