India's Modi picks up trash from seaside town while hosting China's Xi

11 Tibetans Detained For Protesting Against Xi Jinping In Chennai Police

Setting aside recent differences over Ladakh, India and China have made a decision to start a new chapter in their relationship with the "Chennai Vision", Prime Minister Narendra Modi said after holding a second round of informal talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday.

Xi, however, apprised Modi of Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan's visit to Beijing earlier in the Gokhale added.

India in turn has been enraged by China's diplomatic backing for Pakistan, which controls a much larger part of the disputed Muslim-majority Kashmir region.

The two leaders spent "five hours of quality time" together, and most of it was on one-on-one conversation, except during the time they watched the cultural programme, said Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale.

Chinese and Indian leaders have just begun the second day of their one-in-one at India's picturesque resort overlooking the Bay of Bengal, trading pleasantries and trying to reconcile frictions between their nations.

Harsh Pant, an global relations professor at King's College London, told AFP that China's backing of Pakistan "has left a very bad taste in India's mouth".

India and China share a almost 4,000 km border, most of which is disputed. India Today TV is India's leading English News Channel.

China's state run Xinhua news agency reported that Xi and Modi agreed to promote exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations to achieve joint development and prosperity during their meeting on Friday. The announcement of the Wuhan meet had signalled a thaw in bilateral ties after the 73-day India-China military face off at Bhutan's Doklam plateau in 2017.

Their latest meeting, over elaborate meals and dance performances at Mahabalipuram on Friday and Saturday, is aimed at building on that. Modi gave Xi a guided tour of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, which was built during 7th and 8th century and includes Arjuna's Penance, Panch Rathas, Shore Temple and other monuments. Gokhale said the leaders resolved to boost trade and investment, while Mr Modi brought up his country's trade deficit with China.

India and Washington, seeking with others to counter China´s growing regional assertiveness, have deepened military cooperation and India has moved closer to the Quad security dialogue with Japan, the United States and Australia. Modi in Xi had also apparently tried to iron out wrinkles that emerged after New Delhi revoked autonomy status of its Jammu and Kashmir state that borders China.

It mostly revolved around economic cooperation and struggle against extremism that plagues both India and China.

Huawei's "contribution to India's economic and social development is obvious to all", China's foreign ministry said this week, hoping Delhi would make "independent and objective judgments and decisions".
