Korea poses one of biggest ballistic missile threats to US: CRS report

Korea's state news agency on Wednesday

The warning is the latest evidence North Korea is returning to a more combative posture after walking away from the first substantive nuclear negotiations in months.

South Korea's Korea Football Association said last month it had been informed by the Asian Football Confederation that North Korea will host its Group H game against the South as scheduled.

"As the global community has acknowledged, the USA test of intercontinental ballistic missiles was clearly aimed at pressuring us", it continued, warning, notably, that the DPRK "can counteract it at the same level... but are refraining from doing so".

North Korea's short and medium-range projectiles pose one of biggest ballistic missile threats to the United States, along with those from Iran and China, a Congressional report has said. North Korea said the talks collapsed because the US didn't have any new proposals, and whether it maintains a self-imposed moratorium on major weapons tests was up to Washington.

"There is a limit to our patience and there is no law that what we have been restraining from will last indefinitely", the spokesperson said. -North Korea diplomacy, following Saturday's failed working-level talks in Stockholm, Sweden.

North Korea on Thursday slammed a statement by European UN Security Council members urging strict enforcement of sanctions against Pyongyang for its latest missile test, calling the move a "serious provocation".

Since early May, North Korea has conducted 11 rounds of missile tests, most of which involved ballistic missile technology that North Korea is banned from possessing.

Thursday's statement comes amid renewed uncertainty over the future of U.S.

"It looks like North Korea is using the U.S.as a pretext for escalating military action, if talks don't work out", said Rachel Minyoung Lee, a Seoul-based analyst at NK News, a publication that focuses on North Korea affairs.

The North then walked away from the Stockholm talks on Saturday saying it was disappointed at the lack of "new and creative" solutions offered by Washington, although the United States said it was willing to meet again in two weeks.

U.S. President Donald Trump has played down the North's missile tests, saying they are not long-range and do not threaten the United States.

The US test was "clearly carried out in order to pressure us", the North Korean spokesman said.

"When the DPRK envoy to the UN blamed the US for the European Union nations' closed-door meeting a few days ago, it seemed that Pyongyang was laying the groundwork for stepping up criticism of the USA and possibly even using it as a pretext for escalating its own military action", Minyoung Lee, a senior analyst with NK News's sister site NK Pro, said.
