Naomi Osaka chooses Japan over USA for 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Tennis- China Open- Women's Singles- Final

The 22-year-old was born in Japan to a Japanese mom and a Haitian father but was later brought to the U.S. She maintained a duel nationality, but according to Japanese law, people with dual nationality must pick one before their 22nd birthday.

Osaka has represented Japan throughout her career, including at the Fed Cup, and has previously targeted playing at a home Olympics.

Tennis phenom Naomi Osaka is saying goodbye to the United States and hello to Japan. Eastern legislation stipulates that a Eastern with better than one nationality must selected one sooner than turning 22 years frail. Osaka won her first singles title since the Australian Open in January by beating Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 6-3 in the final.

Osaka was raised in the USA and lives in Boca Raton, Fla., and it is unclear if her residence will change.

According to reports, Osaka brushed off comments made by Japanese comedians two weeks ago, who said she was "too sunburned" and "needed some bleach".


Osaka shared with Japan's national broadcasting organisation, NHK, that she has started proceedings to choose Japanese citizenship. "I think that will be one of the most memorable things that ever happens to me".

The Tokyo opening ceremonies are set for July 24, with the tennis events scheduled to begin the following day.
