Kadri Gopalnath, noted saxophonist and Padma Shri awardee, passes away at 69

Famous saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath died at a private hospital in Mangaluru in Karnataka early on Friday, The Hindu reported. He learnt playing Carnatic music through saxophone from N Gopalakrishna Iyer.

Hope the Central Government does the needful in issuing him passport and help him attend his father Kadri Gopalnath's funeral. Some of his most memorable performances were held at worldwide musical conventions such as the Jazz Festival in Prague, Berlin Jazz Festival, global Cervantino Festival in Mexico, and Music Hall Festival in Paris.

Padmashree award victor Kadri Gopalnath is survived by his wife and two sons among whom Manikanth Kadri is a music director. He had played the saxaphone for Tamil film "Duet" helmed by the late director K Balachander with musical score by A R Rahman, popularising the otherwise lesser known instrument among audience in Tamil Nadu.


As reported in several interviews, As a child, Gopalnath once saw the saxophone being played in the Mysore Palace band set.

Mangalore and Bangalore universities had conferred their honorary doctorates on Gopalnath.

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa condoled the death of Gopalanath. His body will be kept at Town Hall for people to be able to pay their last respects before the last rites, likely to take place on 12 October.
