Oilers ride Neal's 4 goals to win over Islanders

TODAY Sports GDB 3.0 Mikko Returns

For all the promise of James Neal's return to his career scoring norms following his first-ever four-goal game, it was a depth player who perhaps offered more signs of optimism for the Oilers.

Neal scored two goals in the first period, including one on the power play, before completing the hat trick in the second period on the power play.

Neal's performance gives him six goals just three games into the season. It'll be interesting to see how head coach Dave Tippett deploys his goaltending tandem - Mike Smith is 2-0 on the season with a 3.50 GAA and a.892 SV% - with the three games left on this current road trip. Starting goalie Semyon Varlamov was chased after giving up four goals on 19 shots. Thomas Greiss came on and stopped seven of the eight shots he faced.

Lucic was still looking for his first point of the season with the Flames heading into Tuesday's contest against the Los Angeles Kings.

Neal finished off his big night at 6:51 of the third for his sixth of the season to make it 5-1.

Edmonton pushed the lead to 4-1 just 2:15 later as Kassian tipped a pass by Draisaitl past Varlamov for his third of the season, ending Varlamov's night.

Neal began and finished the sequence that ended with his first goal.

Neal then put Edmonton ahead with a power-play goal after the Islanders' Brock Nelson was whistled for a double-minor for high-sticking.

The final result was 5-2.

Neal is the second player to score four goals this season, joining Detroit Red Wings forward Anthony Mantha's October 6 performance.

The four-goal outburst was the first against the Islanders since Patrik Elias scored four times for the New Jersey Devils in 2003.
