Police arrest climate action protesters blocking Bloor Viaduct

Extinction Rebellion activists march during Brisbane Rebellion Week in Brisbane Australia Oct. 7 2019. The Extinction Rebellion climate protests movement has planned a 'spring rebellion' from Oct. 7 to 13

Gardaí (Irish police) formed a barrier between the Extinction Rebellion activists and the gates of the building to allow politicians to leave.

Activists say they expect the protests to be as much as five times bigger than ones held in April, which brought major disruption to London and saw more than 1,100 arrests.

The group also staged a mass protest to disrupt Melbourne's CBD last month and is also planning a nude march for later this week.

Police have introduced stricter conditions, saying anyone wanting to continue the protest can only do so in Trafalgar Square.

Demonstrators have already caused carnage on London's streets during the morning rush hour after hundreds of protestors blocked Lambeth Bridge in Central London.

"We have tried petitions, lobbying and marches, and now time is running out", Australian activist Jane Morton told the AFP news agency.

"And this will only reinforce, I hope, our commitment for the coming protests". Some of the protesters locked arms and chained themselves together, refusing to move. A protester hanging from a harness beneath Brisbane's Story Bridge and brandishing "climate emergency" flags was taken into police custody and charged with unregulated high-risk activity.

Halifax police Const. John MacLeod says less than 100 protesters had gathered at the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge linking the city with nearby Dartmouth, prompting officers to close the area to all traffic.

Roed said police spoke with protest coordinators around 9 p.m., and that the majority of them agreed to pack up. Such a scene played out in cities around the world throughout the day.

Founded in Britain past year, the movement, also known as XR, now has chapters in 50 countries. The front page of Tuesday's paper was left intentionally blank for protesters to use as a placard. Protesters also threw red paint on the iconic Charging Bull statue near Wall Street.

Fifty people were arrested in Amsterdam after they erected a tent camp on the main road outside the Rijksmuseum, the Dutch national museum. They earlier set up a tent camp outside German Chancellor Angela Merkel's office out of dissatisfaction with her government's climate policy.

"We all share an interest in climate protection, and the Paris climate targets are our standard in this", Helge Braun, the chief of staff for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, told ZDF television. "But if you announce unsafe interventions in road traffic or things like this, of course that is just not on".
