Robert Downey Jr. Turned Down Disney's Offer For Oscars Campaign

Beth Stern et al. sitting at a table in a room

Robert Downey Jr. was diplomatic in his reaction to feted filmmaker Martin Scorsese's recent remarks that Marvel Films are "not cinema".

"It'll be like saying Howard Stern isn't radio", he added.

"I'm so glad you brought this up, because there was some talk about it and I said 'let's not, '" Downey Jr. explained of a potential Oscar nomination.

Anyway, Stern also asked if Downey Jr. felt insulted by the comments. Ultimately, he feels the director of "The Irishman" has a right to share his opinion, even if the masses disagree. I appreciate his opinion because I think it's like anything. "You know, 'Heaven Can Wait, ' 'Young Frankenstein, ' 'Blazing Saddles, ' 'Goodbye Girl, '" she added.

But there's one very important person lobbying on Downey's behalf: Jon Favreau, who directed Downey in the first Iron Man.

"Martin Scorsese has made such wonderful movies".

Talking to Empire, he persevered, saying: "Honestly, the closest I'm in a position to think them, as properly made as they're, with actors doing basically the most fantastic they are going to below the cases, is theme parks".

The veteran filmmaker ruffled feathers when he said in a recent interview that he do not consider "Marvel movies" as "cinema" and finds them lacking on the "emotional and psychological experiences". It doesn't make sense.

That's when Stern suggested Scorsese, a noted film archivist, might indeed be jealous - and getting old.

Actress Jennifer Aniston is the latest Hollywood star to deplore the role of "big Marvel movies" in filmmaking, as she relayed in a Variety interview this week. "Martin Scorsese probably doesn't have the emotional attachment to those movies that I do", he said. I mean, that is a profound performance, when you can touch audiences all over the world to that degree.

Stern pushed back, needling Downey Jr. about what Scorsese meant.

For his part, Phillips turned down other comic book-based films in the wake of his Hangover trilogy success because he found them to be "loud".

The genre helped her make the transition from the television screen to the movie screen.

"I don't know if I have ever seen - in movie history - a global audience react to a performance the way they did to Robert Downey in (Avengers: Endgame)", Russo told The Daily Beast last month. Due to their respective successes and influence, the films have paved the way for studios to try and do the same for other groups in the future, with movies such as Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" having the green light for production.
