In newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it shows that the rate of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) continues to rise in Washington, and across the country.

According to a 2018 STD Surveillance Report from the CDC, combined cases of syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia reached an all-time high in the United States past year with more than 2.4 million cases. Congenital syphilis is a disease that occurs when a mother with syphilis passes the infection on to her baby during pregnancy.

CDC also said more than 115,000 cases of syphilis were reported in 2018, marking a 13% increase since 2017 and hitting the highest overall number of syphilis cases reported since 1991.

"

"From 2014 to 2018, 23 cases of congenital syphilis were reported; this compares to only 13 cases reported from 1995 to 2013."

".

It's the most ever reported in a year, though the trend is mainly attributed to increased testing. Congenital syphilis can be fatal to infants: there were 22 stillbirths or neonatal deaths in 2018. "This points to our need for public health and health care action for each of the cases in this report, as they represent real people, not just numbers". "Testing is simple and can help women to protect their babies from syphilis - a preventable disease that can have irreversible consequences".

$5 million per year for STD prevention and control by local health departments and community based organizations.

Antibiotics can cure syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, but the diseases must be caught early and not left untreated. A new bulletin by the CDC paints a particularly dire picture of sexual health in the United States, with some diseases reaching levels not seen for nearly 20 years, and others reaching legitimate all-time highs.

The Washington State Department of Health says STD's (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) have risen steadily over the last five years, and nationally, are at an all time high-in Washington state as well.
