Taiwan leader rejects China's 'one country, two systems' offer

Tsai on June 25 called on the international community to 'constrain' China by standing up for freedoms casting her

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen is rejecting China's "one country, two systems" formula, saying Hong Kong's experience should serve as a warning.

Recent events in the former British colony have however undermined that model, given that China's influence in Hong Kong is ever greater in economic, cultural and political terms, weakening Hong Kong's liberal regime.

Pan Chao-min, a professor at Tunghai University's Graduate Institute of Political Science in Taiwan, said Tsai's linking of the unrest in Hong Kong with Taiwan was part of a campaign strategy to give the impression she is the right person to protect Taiwan from Chinese oppression.

"China is using its "one country, two systems" program to threaten us nonstop and has used all sorts of attacks and mounted virulent challenges to regional peace and stability", Tsai said in her speech at the presidential office building in the center of the capital, Taipei.

Taiwan has been one of the strongest sources of overseas support for the Hong Kong protesters, amid growing global condemnation of aggressive tactics used by city leader Carrie Lam's Beijing-backed government.

"China is still threatening to impose its "one country, two systems" model for Taiwan".

"If she refers only to Taiwan and not the Republic of China the appeal might only be limited to voters who always support the Democratic Progressive Party".

The framework of "one country, two systems" preserved Hong Kong's independent judiciary, civil liberties, and capitalist economic system, but China's ruling Communist Party under President Xi Jinping has been increasingly accused of encroaching on such freedoms.

The revealing aspect of the survey is many Taiwanese prefer the status quo - neither being ruled by the People's Republic nor proclaiming de jure independence.

Taiwan's National Day, marking the anniversary of the start of a 1911 uprising that led to the end of dynastic rule in China and the founding of a republic, was celebrated in Taipei with singing, dancing and parades.

Taiwan has lost seven diplomatic allies over the past three years, including Kiribati and Solomon islands in September ahead of China's National Day on October 1. Beijing also commands a massive military and has hundreds of missiles pointed directly at Taiwan.

Since 1949, when Chiang Kai-shek fled the mainland, Taiwan has been the seat of the government of the Republic of China, now recognised by 15 countries in the world.

Specifically, this year's NDAA reaffirmed the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances as the cornerstone of the Taiwan-U.S. relationship and also allowed for expanded exchanges to boost Taiwan's self-defense capabilities, Tsai said.

"The president, of course, knew that we had a relationship with Taiwan, and he didn't see what all the fuss was about, and he didn't care", said Sanders, who served as press secretary from July 2017 to July this year.

The US has no formal ties with Taiwan but is bound by law to help provide it with the means to defend itself.
