Trump says despite pullout plan U.S. has not 'abandoned the Kurds'

US President Donald Trump speaks about Turkey and Syria at the White House in Washington

President Trump urged Turkey on Wednesday to protect civilians and safeguard Islamic State prisons as it launched a military operation in northern Syria against Syrian Kurdish forces, saying the United States would hold its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally responsible for the consequences of its decision to attack a key us counterterrorism partner.

Syrian National Army forces in are dispatched to the Manbij front line near Aleppo ahead of Turkey's planned operation in northern Syria, on Tuesday. "Our mission is to prevent the creation of a terror corridor across our southern border, and to bring peace to the area". "The Department's position has been and remains that establishing a safe zone in northern Syria is the best path forward to maintaining stability".

"We will protect the territorial integrity of Syria and save the region's people from the claws of terror", Erdoğan added.

Meanwhile, in parts of the United States government, anger continued to fester against Turkey for the planned attack after the extensive preparations made to set up a security mechanism to placate Ankara's suspicion of Kurdish units.

It was unclear whether the pause affected every aspect of US -partnered operations against Islamic State or whether there might be exceptions. An influx of non-Kurdish Syrians would help it secure a buffer against its main security threat.

"People are scared. When we used to see United States troops in the streets of Tal Abyad, we would feel safe; they were here to protect us".

With Turkey turning away from that agreement, however, the USA troops at the center may be called on to instead monitor the Turkish operation and make sure that US troops stay out of harm's way, the US officials said.

"Turkey is one of the countries most affected by DAESH's bloody activities and has fought against this terrorist organization both domestically and beyond its borders with increasing tempo and intensity", the ministry said in a tweet posted on its official twitter page.

"Turkey is conducting an operation with the sole aim of achieving peace".

In 2016, Operation Euphrates Shield was launched with the intent of targeting IS in northern Syria and then Operation Olive Branch in 2018 saw the YPG driven out of the northwestern region of Afrin. Also, the U.S. Navy's Mideast headquarters is at Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. "Turkey is not a country that will bow to threats". "Without close air support and ISR this could be a much bloodied fight for Turkey and it's proxies". The US also severely limited Turkey's access to airspace over north-east Syria yesterday, crippling its capability to provide aerial cover throughout the operation. Ankara has said it plans to create a "safe zone" in order to return millions of refugees to Syrian soil. "This decision aids America's adversaries, Russia, Iran, and Turkey, and paves the way for a resurgence of ISIS".

The People's Protection Units (YPG) is the dominant military force in the SDF.

The two operations were in line with the country's right to self-defense borne out of global law, UN Security Council resolutions, especially no. 1624 (2005), 2170 (2014) and 2178 (2014), and under the right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, while being respectful of Syria's territorial integrity.

Following the announcement of the Turkish operation yesterday, Syrian opposition groups - as well as Syrian Turkmen forces - have also pledged their support for the operation and are expected to join in once it is launched. Turkey has suffered greatly from ISIL attacks inside the country.

S&P Global Ratings said the military deployment raised risks for the lira and Turkey's balance of payments, which has improved markedly since a currency crisis past year tipped its economy into recession. The group claims to espouse an ideology called "Democratic Confederalism", based on the ideology of Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) founder and leader Abdullah Ocalan, who has been in prison in Turkey since 1999.
