UAW letter to GM indicates that strike won't end quickly

GM appeals directly to UAW workers: 'The strike has been hard on you, your families ...'

"Our members are ready to get back to work, but GM is purposefully stalling the process to starve UAW-GM workers off the picket lines to protect millions of dollars of corporate bonuses", the UAW says. The union says GM has tried to "undermine" its efforts before and during the strike.

In total, GM would commit to $9 billion worth of direct and indirect investment.

"Our offer commits to thousands of new jobs right here in the USA and billions of dollars in new investments in our communities".

The extended strike has been a drag on both the company and its workers, who have been subsisting on $250 a week in strike pay - far less than what they would normally get.

GM stock was up 2.8% at $35.62 on Friday afternoon. He said GM made a comprehensive offer to the union this past Monday which included improved wages, a way for temporary employees to become permanent employees, maintaining the current health care coverage and commitments to invest billions of dollars in USA plants to create thousands of new USA jobs.

For temporary workers, GM said its offer would create a path to permanent employment and include a ratification bonus.

"We have advised the union that it's critical that we get back to producing quality vehicles for our customers", he wrote.

"The company's strategy from day one has been to play games at the expense of the workers", the UAW statement says.

In it, Dittes said the union would respond to the company's offer once various negotiating committees working on specific issues work out their differences. I am writing to you today so you know where things stand.

"During this meeting, GM CEO Mary Barra requested all committees work to resolve their open issues simultaneously so the company could receive a comprehensive proposal from the union".

A day after senior union officials met with GM chief executive Mary Barra for the first time, the company late Thursday evening sent a letter expressing its frustration with the union's lack of response to an offer it made on Monday.

The messages mark a turning point for GM in the fourth week of a strike that's halted production at 34 US plants and disrupted output at factories in Mexico and Canada. But those other issues also must be resolved as part of an agreement.

Reuters previously reported GM told the UAW it could build a new battery plant near the now-shuttered Lordstown, Ohio, factory, and build the electric truck at its Detroit Hamtramck plant.

And while the strike is costly, it is more important that GM reach a deal that maintains its operating flexibility than it is that GM reaches an uncompetitive deal quickly, according to Moody's analyst Bruce Clark.

GM shares have fallen 11% since the strike began. That's why before the contract deadline, we made an offer that we felt was strong.

Committees are working on issues such as products for factories that GM wants to close, investments in other US factories, and training for union workers to handle future technology, according to Dittes' letter.
