(UPDATED) Prime Video App Disappears from the App Store

Hong Kong Protests

The Register notes that as of 3:00 am Hong Kong time, messages on the app read: "After the tear gas was applied, the police officer immediately returned to the police station". But, the app is used exclusively to track police activity and protest movements.

He added that similar apps have existed on the App Store for much longer. "Specifically, the app allowed users to evade law enforcement", HKmap.live quoted Apple as saying in an October 1 tweet.

The makers of HKmap Live have appealed the decision and the application to the App Store is now underway again.

Apple has not commented on this but this looks to be a mistake of some sort on the part of the App Store.

HKmap.live expressed frustration over Apple's decision in a series of tweets on October 1.

According to market research firm App Annie, Amazon Prime Video was the No. 4 most popular entertainment app in the App Store for iPhones in the U.S.as of October 3, after TikTok, Netflix and Hulu - and Prime Video was the No. 1 app for iPads in the category.

In the latest installment of "Apple placates China", however, the collateral damage are the Hong Kong protesters which saw one of their specialized iOS apps get pulled from the App Store on Tuesday.

On Oct. 1, a police officer shot a teenage protester in the chest with live round. "Specifically, the app allowed users to evade law enforcement", the HKmap Live's developers said in a tweet on Monday. It also noted that anything can be used for illegal purposes in the wrong hands and that the app is designed only to provide information. The reasoning? "Your app contains content -or facilitates, enables, and encourages an activity- that is not legal".

Sadly this means that if you don't have the app installed, you won't be able to install it on new devices. It is possible that yesterday's update caused some type of issue that forced Apple to remove the app.
