US Presses Turkey With Threat Of Economic Sanctions

BREAKING Trump Administration Threatens Sanctions on Turkey

WASHINGTON-Twenty-nine of President Donald Trump's fellow Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives announced on October 10 they would introduce legislation to impose sanctions against Turkey, underscoring lawmakers' unhappiness about its assault on Kurdish forces in Syria.

"There are no sanctions at this time, but this will be the broadest executive authorities delegated to us", Mnuchin said during the briefing.

"We are putting financial institutions on notice that they should be careful and that there could be sanctions", Mnuchin said.

"We are witnessing ethnic cleansing in Syria by Turkey, the destruction of a reliable ally in the Kurds, and the reemergence of ISIS (Islamic State)", Graham said in a statement calling on the administration "to up their game".

The sanctions would place immediate prohibitions on US defense transactions with Turkey, including aircraft and related parts used by the Turkish air force, automotive equipment and services used by the Turkish army and navy, and weapons.

Mnuchin called the executive order "very significant" and "any person associated with the government of Turkey, any portion of the government" could be targeted. The people killed, Akar said, were members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which the USA has designated as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO), and fighters from the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG).

"I want to emphasize at this point, we are not activating the sanctions".

Trump issued a similar aggressive threat against the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally on Monday.

One of the Republican party's leading voices on foreign affairs, Senator Lindsey Graham, has announced a bipartisan sanctions bill similar to that of Engel and McCaul.

"It is a complicated situation", Mr. Mnuchin said. The YPG is a group that leads the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and has been a USA ally against Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS).

He said the sanctions would target specific Turkish individuals or departments "as needed". And on Friday, the group reported that five ISIS members had escaped from a prison after Turkish mortar rounds landed nearby. It also called on Turkey to immediately stop military action in northeast Syria and called on the United States to stand with Syrian Kurdish communities affected by violence.
