With the cyclone "Bulbul" intensifying into a very severe cyclonic storm and triggering heavy rain in parts of Odisha and West Bengal, the two states are bracing for the impact. Cyclone "Bulbul", now moving at a speed of 13 kilometres per hour, may intensify further by Saturday, Biswas said.

The IMD has issued warnings of light to moderate rainfall at most places very likely over north coastal districts of Odisha with isolated heavy falls over Puri, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore and Jagatsinghpur districts.

The NDRF has stationed a total of 34 teams in West Bengal and Odisha in view of the approaching severe cyclone Bulbul, a senior official said on Friday. It suggested that coastal hutment dwellers be moved to safer places.

Winds of up to 110kph and heavy rainfall from the fringe of Bulbul have already lashed Odisha state, uprooting trees that blocked many roads. "There could be damage to coastal crops, small boats, country crafts may get detached from morning", said the Weather Department. Port authorities in Paradip have also taken steps to combat the storm, Jena said.

"We have also started vacating houses and building in both residential and hotel situated close to the sea", the official said that all leaves of the officials have been cancelled.

A monitoring cell has been opened at Nabanno, the state secretariat, to keep an eye on the situation.

Considering the severity of the storm and possibility of damage to property and lives, the Centre has asked the West Bengal and Odisha governments to take all steps to deal with "Bulbul" and ensure that there is minimum casualty and damage.
