Dozens rescued after blast in Germany

Workers rescued after explosion at east German mine

The workers were able to escape to a so-called safety room, where they were supplied with oxygen, said a spokesman for the State Mining Office in Halle on Friday.

Two people were injured in an explosion at the mine of GTS Grube Teutschenthal Sicherungs GmbH, with several dozen people now sheltering underground.

One victim was seriously injured, the other slightly injured, said a police spokeswoman in Halle (Saale), near where the incident occurred in the Saalekreis district.

The workers who were trapped had taken refuge in a safe sector of the mine, it is believed.

All-around 35 individuals at this time had been some 700 meters (2,300 toes) underground proper after the explosion, in protected spots and geared up with oxygen, the objective out mining authority in Saxony-Anhalt defined. Rescuers are working on site; the cause of the explosion has not been established yet.

According to German media, early indications were that no harmful substances had spread into the wider environment.

The former potash salt mine was shut down in 1982 and has since been converted into a backfill mine, according to the operator.

Teutschenthal is a town near Halle in eastern Germany, around 95 miles from Berlin. About 100 women and men function on the facility.
