Earthquake in Iran, 3 killed, 20 injured: state television

An quake in northwestern Iran killed at least four people and injured 70 early on Friday, according to Iranian media reports quoting officials.

The temblor struck Tark county in Iran's Eastern Azerbaijan province at 2:17 am (2347 UTC), according to the country's seismological center.

The city of Ridgecrest was hit with another natural disaster Thursday morning.

The area is some 400 kilometers (250 miles) northwest of the capital, Tehran.

Hundreds of people reported feeling the quake, including some reports as far north as Santa Barbara. It described numerous injuries happening when people fled in panic. "Unfortunately six people were killed and 345 injured", Iran's emergency medical services chief, Pirhossein Kolivand, told state TV.


Up to 30 homes were destroyed near the epicentre, it added. The quake had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Shallower earthquakes are more likely to cause greater damage.

Iran sits on two major tectonic plates and is prone to frequent seismic activity.

The country has suffered a number of major disasters in recent decades, including at the ancient city of Bam, which was decimated by a catastrophic quake in 2003 that killed at least 31 000 people.
