Five-judge Constitution bench to deliver verdict in Ayodhya case tomorrow

India's court set to deliver verdict on temple dispute

Muslims, however, say they have worshipped there for generations.

Singh added that police had also identified more than 10,000 people he described as "anti-social".

"Each and every security officer is committed to prevent minor skirmishes or large-scale riots after the court delivers its verdict", said one senior home ministry official, who declined to be named.

Navaid Hamid, president of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat, the top forum for Islamic organisations, said thousands of Muslim religious leaders had pledged to maintain peace and harmony after the court verdict.

The judgment has serious social and political implications as it will come just a couple of weeks before the 27th anniversary of demolition of Babri Masjid.

All government schools and many private schools are closed tomorrow, as it is a second Saturday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a series of tweets appealed for peace ahead of the verdict. In the run up to Ayodhya verdict, efforts have been made by various people and organisations to maintain harmonious atmosphere. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which heads the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre, had in its election manifesto promised to build a Ram temple at the site.

In the 1980s, as Hindu nationalism and the BJP began to strengthen, pressure grew for the mosque to be knocked down and replaced by a vast Hindu temple.

Hinduism is India's majority religion and is thought to be more than 4,000 years old.

Hindus make up about 80 per cent of India's 1.3 billion population while there are about 200 million Muslims.

They filed a title dispute in the Allahabad High Court in 2002, a decade after the mosque was demolished.

The original verdict ordered the division of the disputed 2.77 acres of land in Ayodhya into three equal parts to be divided among the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara, a religious denomination; and the Ram Lalla Virajman, which represents the child deity Ram.

The bench on 16 October had reserved the judgement after marathon hearing of 40 days.

Both Hindu and Muslim groups appealed and the Supreme Court in 2011 stayed the lower court's ruling, leaving the issue unresolved.
