Hong Kong girds for more protests; student in critical condition

Protest at Chinese University of Hong Kong

Mr Chow fell from the third floor to the second floor of a parking garage in the Tseung Kwan O neighbourhood while police worked nearby to disperse protesters.

The Hospital Authority said the 22-year-old died Friday morning, but didn't provide further details.

The circumstances of how Chow received his injuries were unclear but police said he was believed to have fallen from one floor to another in a parking lot during weekend crowd dispersal operations in a district east of the Kowloon peninsula.

Minutes earlier, television footage showed riot police firing tear gas at the building after objects were hurled down at the officers in the street when they chased off a mob.

Police officials have acknowledged that tear gas had been used to disperse protesters near the auto park where Chow fell on Sunday night.

Notices circulated on social media said students planned a march on Friday at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

The college held its graduation ceremony Friday morning, and university head Wei Shyy paused the proceedings to announce Chow's death.

The Provisional President of the university's student union, Lai Wai-chun, said he hopes the school's authorities can investigate the reasons for Chow's fall and for the alleged delay in emergency medical personnel reaching him. Some carried white flowers and placards that read "Hong Kong is a police state".

Dressed in formal graduation gowns, numerous students sang as they walked from a subway station to the ceremony site, asking the government to respond to protesters' demands that include universal suffrage. A "comprehensive investigation to find out what happened is being conducted", it added.

Students swarmed the hospital in support of the man, surnamed Chow, to hold prayers and gatherings and at universities across the former British colony.

The global finance hub has been shaken by five months of huge and increasingly violent protests calling for greater democratic freedoms and police accountability. Last month, police shot two teens with live bullets in separate incidents but both recovered.
